Moving House - the formalities
|
Services and utilities
Before leaving your old home, you should inform your electricity / gas provider so that the meters can be read and services disconnected if necessary. If the services have not been disconnected at your new home you can usually transfer your account by telephone.
The same procedure needs to be carried out for your water supplier .
Telecommunications services
You can terminate your old phone / internet contract and open another for your new home by telephone. If you are moving within the same geographical area you may be able to keep your old phone number.
If this is not possible, some providers offer a service which redirects calls from your old phone number. The Post Office can redirect your post for periods of 1, 3, 6 or 12 months with an option to renew for up to a maximum of 2 years. See the Post Office website for more details.
Official documents
You must advise the DVLA immediately of any changes to your address. You can update your driving licence online or send it to DVLA for amendment. For more information, consult the direct.gov website.
Insurance
You must advise your car insurer of your change of address. The premium may be affected by a change in geographical area or a change of use.
You also need to inform your home and buildings insurer. If you want to use this opportunity to change insurers, check your policy to see what the terms and conditions are for cancelling it.
Bank
Advise your bank about your change of address so that statements can be sent to your new address.
Schools
When changing schools you need to contact your local County Council. Some County Councils require you to fill out a Changing Schools Application. Children must usually be enrolled within 7 days of moving house.
Council Tax / Tax Office
You will need to notify your local council about your move. You can do this online on the iammoving.com website.
When moving, let your Tax Office know as soon as possible. This will prevent the loss or late arrival of:
- payments you're due
- important forms asking for details about your income and allowances
- keeping HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) up to date may help prevent you over or under-paying tax
You may also avoid automatic penalties and surcharges for sending in your tax return late or paying your tax late because the forms went to the wrong place.
Your employer or payroll will not tell HMRC that you have changed address. |
